Breakdowns: Common Issues and How to Deal with Them

Updated: Sep 5, 2019

As a truck driver, it's critical to keep your tool of the trade - your truck - operating safely and as efficiently as possible. In the fast-paced world of commercial transportation, any disruptions including break downs and emergency repairs can significantly impact profitability. Additionally, unscheduled or emergency truck repair may negatively impact the crucial supply chain you support.

To keep your trucking business rolling along smoothly, here are some tips to address some of the most frequent causes of breakdowns on the road.

Tires And Tire Care

The wheels and tires on your rig play a significant role in your safety. Before leaving for your destination, it is always a good idea to take a few extra minutes to inspect your tires and wheels.

Be on the lookout for low tires, uneven wear on tread, low tread depth, or other visible damages. If you notice something that could cause problems while you're on the road, it's worth addressing these issues before placing yourself and other motorists at potential risk.

If you recognize a pattern of these problems recurring, check your wheel axles to assure they are in proper alignment. Additionally, confirm that your truck has the recommended commercial tires installed. Either of these can cause irregular tire wear.

Electrical System

Your truck is very much like your home in that it requires electricity to run optimally. The electric in your vehicle gets generated by the battery, starter motor, and alternator.

Many of the functions of your vehicle rely on electric including the ignition, heating and air systems, interior and exterior lights, the computer, radios, and power windows, to name a few.

Like all electrical grids, too much demand for resources strains the system and could negatively impact the performance of your truck.

If possible, consider using LED lights for inside and outside of the truck. These lights are energy-efficient and robust so that you can drive through the darkness with confidence.

Braking System

Having responsive and reliable brakes is your first line of defense in keeping yourself, your cargo, and the lives of other motorists safe.

Like all brake systems, truck brakes are susceptible to corrosion and damage from frequent use. Other factors, including friction and heat, can put additional pressure on brake lines that can potentially be problematic.

To avoid brake issues, it is always a wise decision to keep your brakes, and brake lines maintained adequately.
