Signs Your Roof Needs to Be Replaced

Updated: Aug 23, 2019

Everything needs an update at some point, and as a homeowner, you know this better than most. The problem is some things are a little harder to replace than others, like your roof, yet roof replacement is going to be needed someday. The following are a few signs telling you it might be time for a new roof.

Age Alone

A good reason to call a roofing company you can trust like Expanded Roofing is the age of your roof. Most roofs do not last longer than 20 years, so any roof that is older than that should be inspected. All sorts of issues could be lurking in an old roof, so keep that in mind.

Obvious Damage

Sometimes, roofs develop issues for various reasons, and these issues could compromise your roof's ability to keep your home safe. For example, you could see curled shingles or missing shingles. Both problems could cause water damage when water leaks in. It could also expose you to rodent and insect infestation, and you do not want that because it'll end up costing more later on.

Update is Needed

Old roofs may not have signs of damage directly because they were taken care of, and that is great, but that does not mean it is not ready to be updated. A dated roof can bring your property value down. You do not want that, especially if you are thinking of selling your home at some point. Those who are updating other areas of their home should consider the roof because a dated roof defeats the purpose of your other improvements.

Keeping Up

Another good reason to consider replacing your roof is if your neighbors are doing it. This sounds like you are doing this to keep up with the Joneses, but there is more to it than that. Yes, keeping up with your neighbors helps keep your property value relatively high, but your neighbors are upgrading for a reason, too. Most of the time, homes in a community are built around the same time, so your neighbors might be replacing their roofs because it is time, and you may need to follow suit.

Changes are Here

Those installing solar panels or making other changes linked to the roof may need to replace it, too. Roofs are not always built to withstand some of these new additions, so you need to make sure your roof is ready, and replace it if it's not. Talk to your roofer about some of your plans so that he or she can inspect your roof and guide you.

Hopefully, some of these points make it easier for you to know when it is time to replace the roof. It is a massive undertaking, but it is meant to help you.
